So you go into your local chemist or your local supermarket and find yourself in the healthcare aisle – looking at row upon row of tooth paste! We all know that looking after your teeth is vital, and part of that is to brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time. But who’d have thought there were so many tooth pastes to choose from?! Are they all the same? Does it really matter which one I buy? There are ones for children too? Which one is right for me – Whitening toothpaste? Fluoride toothpaste? Plaque-beating toothpaste? Toothpaste for sensitive teeth?

How to Choose the Right Toothpaste - Tooth Doctor in Essex and ThurrockWhich Tooth Paste is Right for You?

We all want white teeth, fresh breath and to avoid plaque, yet we can’t use three different toothpastes every day. So, if you want to know which toothpaste is right for you, you need to know what is actually in each of them. Most recognised brands of toothpaste have the same basic ingredients, normally including;

  • Flouride: This actively protects your teeth against decay.
  • Calcium: This helps to strengthen teeth and remove stains
  • Flavouring and foaming agents

So, in truth, any toothpaste containing these three basic ingredients should, if used correctly and regularly, be enough to keep your teeth healthy and free from decay. Of course, you have to put the effort in too!

Outside of these factors, it really is down to personal preference and taste. If you prefer a whitening toothpaste for example, just be careful as they can be sometimes be a little abrasive and cause damage to your enamel. Also, remember that as every person’s teeth are different, using a whitening toothpaste may not be as effective for you as it is for someone else. If in doubt about its effectiveness, please get in touch with your dentist here for more advice.

Some brands on the market claim to help remove stains caused by nicotine. Again this is only possible by being extremely abrasive. Obviously the better option is to give up smoking rather than use ‘smokers’ toothpaste. However, you may wish to consider professional whitening with your dentist instead, which provide far better results than any toothpaste will achieve.

‘Sensitive’ toothpastes can work for a lot of people. The active ingredients, such as Strontium or Potassium Chloride can help to make sensitivity more bearable. Ultimately, however, we would recommend you see your dentist to help find the cause of the discomfort.

Finally, it is important for children to have their own specially formulated toothpaste. Most brands or even supermarket own brands will usually have toothpaste for 0-2 years 3-5 years and 6years+. This is due to the agreed ‘safe’ levels of fluoride for each age group.

FAQs on Choosing the Right Toothpaste - Tooth Doctor in Essex and ThurrockFrequently Asked Questions about Choosing Your Tooth Paste

  1. What is the most important factor when choosing toothpaste? The most crucial factor is fluoride content, as it helps prevent cavities and strengthens tooth enamel.
  2. Are there toothpaste options for sensitive teeth?Yes, there are toothpaste brands specifically designed for sensitive teeth. They contain ingredients to reduce sensitivity.

  5. Are natural or organic toothpaste options better?Natural toothpaste can be effective, but not all are ADA-approved. Look for the ADA Seal of Approval for a reliable choice.
  6. Do I need a specific toothpaste for gum issues?Yes, if you have gum problems, consider a toothpaste designed for gum health. It may contain antibacterial agents.
  7. Can toothpaste whiten teeth effectively?Whitening toothpaste can help remove surface stains, but for deeper whitening, consult your dentist.

  14. Can I make my own toothpaste at home?Homemade toothpaste recipes exist, but they may not be as effective or safe as commercial options. Consult your dentist before trying homemade toothpaste.
  15. Is it safe to use flavoured toothpaste for children?Flavoured toothpaste is safe for children and can make brushing more appealing, but ensure it has age-appropriate fluoride levels.
  16. What are the considerations for those with allergies?Check toothpaste ingredients for allergens. Some toothpaste brands are specially formulated for people with allergies or sensitivities.
  17. Can I use toothpaste with a broken tooth or braces? It’s generally safe, but be cautious near sensitive areas. Soft-bristle brushes may help prevent further damage.
  18. Should I choose a toothpaste with added mouthwash?Toothpaste with mouthwash can provide extra freshness, but it’s not a substitute for regular mouthwash if needed.
  19. Can I use toothpaste on my gums?Toothpaste is meant for teeth, not gums. Gently brush your gums with a toothbrush using fluoride toothpaste.
  20. Is it necessary to consult my dentist before choosing toothpaste? While it’s not required, consulting your dentist can help you make the best choice based on your specific dental needs and concerns.

Booked appointment well in advance as have 2 young children I needed to arrange childcare for.Randomly receive a text saying my appointment cancelled, upon calling I was greeted with an unhelpful and unsympathetic receptionist who couldn't tell me why my appointment was cancelled alongside refused to rebook the appointment for the day id booked again which I'd arranged childcare for.I'd avoid like the plague if this is the service received before even arriving. I'll be booking elsewhere for sure

What a fantastic dentists! After trying most of the local dentists in the Brentwood area and most having a long waiting list I was presently surprised at how fast and simple the booking process was.The dental treatment was for my father who suffers from poor mental health and hadn't been to the dentist for over 20 years so this was extremely daunting for him. From the first call to our last treatment, the team were Fantastic. They went above and beyond to make my father feel at ease throughout the process and have such a high level for patients care and wellbeing. The work carried out was A1 and my father was extremely happy with his dental work and would highly recommend!!From Derek and Feeddie THANK YOU!ps. Sorry for the delay!
